When the band was formed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already quite well known at the time, having already performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. But it was with Cream that Clapton became a worldwide superstar. The band broke away from the traditional rock 'n' roll song and developed a completely new approach to rock music with their long jams, influenced more by improvisation and jazz.
