Soap&Skin releases "Torso", her fourth studio and first pure cover album. Anja Plaschg alias Soap&Skin has always had a special talent for reinterpreting songs with her own unique approach. When the Donau-Festival invited her to perform all the cover songs she had written over the years in one evening in 2022, she came up with the idea of a permanent collection - which has now been bundled together and released as the album "Torso".
Covers could also be heard on the previous albums "Narrow" (2012) and "From Gas to Solid / You Are My Friend" (2018) without them being immediately recognizable as such. Simply because "it feels good to escape from myself", says Plaschg. She likes covers - quite literally as camouflage and a hiding place. She first recorded the radio hit "Voyage, Voyage", originally by Desireless, in 2011 for the soundtrack to Sebastian Meise's film "Stillleben". Since then, it has been part of her live repertoire and has grown with her over the years. On "Torso" it finds its place as a lifetime version. Her biggest hit to date, "Me and the Devil", which has reached an audience of millions thanks to several viral social media moments, is also a cover.
The first single, the album opener "Mystery Of Love", originally released by Sufjan Stevens, newly arranged with French horn and trombone, allows us to gently immerse ourselves in the soundscape of "Torso". "I hear a song," she adds, "and feel that there's something else I'd like to add. Then I don't listen to the original anymore. Sometimes not for years. I record the songs from memory." She hasn't heard "The End" by The Doors for over seven years now. An old favorite song, a little time capsule. In addition to these songs, "Torso" also includes covers of "Girl Loves Me" by David Bowie, for which she contributed an elaborate and impressive music video, "Pale Blue Eyes" by The Velvet Underground and "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes.
